Welsh roots. Family focus. Learning that lasts.

We are Awen Software. A small, founder-led team based in Wales building mobile apps that make children want to learn at home.

What does "Awen" mean?

Awen (pronounced ah-wen) is a Welsh word with no simple English translation. It means creative inspiration. The divine spark, the flowing spirit. In the Welsh bardic tradition, the Awen is the muse: the force that moves a poet, a musician, a storyteller to create something meaningful.

We chose this name because we believe the same force should exist in learning. Children are not unmotivated. They are uninspired by the wrong rewards. Our job is to find the thing that moves them.

The three dots above our logo represent the three rays of Awen. A symbol used in Welsh culture since the 18th century to represent the balance of earth, sky, and sea, or truth, beauty, and love. We wear it with pride.

"To make children want to learn, by connecting their effort to things that matter in their real lives."

We believe the biggest barrier to learning at home is not ability, and it is not content. It is motivation. Children are naturally curious. The problem is that digital rewards. Stars, stickers, virtual coins. Lose their power within days.

We fix this by anchoring the reward system in the real world, where parents are the reward-givers and children earn access to experiences they actually want. A cinema trip. Choosing Saturday's dinner. An extra hour of screen time. A sleepover.

When a child knows that doing 10 maths questions today gets them 40 points closer to a day out, they do the maths questions. Not because they have to. Because they want to.

Why we build for Wales

Wales consistently underperforms in international maths assessments (PISA). Children in Wales score below their peers in England, Scotland, and most of Western Europe. A gap that begins in primary school and compounds through secondary.

The Welsh Government's Curriculum for Wales reform creates both urgency and opportunity. New attainment frameworks, a renewed focus on foundational numeracy, and growing parental awareness of KS2 outcomes mean families are looking for tools that work. Not just apps that entertain.

We build for the Welsh context first: Curriculum for Wales alignment, Welsh Personalised Assessments (not just English SATs), and Welsh-medium content on our roadmap. But everything we build works equally well for families across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Wales-first

We build for the Welsh curriculum and Welsh families first. Welsh-medium content is on our roadmap.

UK-wide

All content aligns to the UK National Curriculum and works for every family across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

SATs-aligned

Question weighting follows SATs specifications so revision hits the topics that matter most in Year 6.

What we stand for

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales-first, UK-wide

We build for the Welsh context first. Welsh Curriculum, local relevance, Welsh-medium on the roadmap. But everything we build works for every family across the UK.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family over school

We are not a school tool. The parent and child are our users, together. No teacher accounts, classroom licences, or institutional buy-in required.

🎁 Real rewards, not fake ones

We will not compete with digital badge systems. We compete with real life. Our rewards are things children actually want and parents actually give.

🔒 Privacy as a default

No child data on servers. No child email. No ads targeting children. No social features. Children use anonymous accounts. This is how we build, not a checkbox we tick.

📐 Depth over breadth

We would rather have 29,000 questions carefully categorised, difficulty-graded, and year-group-aligned than 100,000 questions scraped from the internet.

🔧 Simple and lasting

We are a small team. We build things that are simple, testable, and privacy-safe. Software that lasts rather than software that needs constant maintenance.

Builders, not managers.

Awen Software is a small, founder-led team based in Wales. We do the work ourselves. Design, engineering, content, and customer relationships.

We built Bucket Filler because we believed the problem was real and the existing solutions were not good enough. We continue building it because families tell us it is working.
